Chapter Four: At Marletto’s Café

Overview

Lyra reaches Aleppo, adopts a witch-queen persona, and gains an audience with the powerful merchant Mustafa Bey. He unmasks her identity, outlines the perilous route toward Karamakan, offers swift bus passage in exchange for reports, and warns of subtle decay in the rose trade. He also reveals Ionides as ex-professor and spy Rashid Xenakis. Elsewhere, the Tashbulak research station lies destroyed, with Chen scavenging the ruins.

Summary

Lyra arrives in prosperous, serene Aleppo with Ionides, who urgently warns her never to utter a dangerous phrase in public. After securing a cheap room, she reflects on the lost alethiometer, safeguards the needle, and tentatively tries the old man’s cards, drawing an image of violent conflict that offers no clear guidance.

Determined, Lyra crafts a cover: Queen Tatiana Iorekova, with Ionides as Magister Parathanasius. Together they stage a grand entrance to Marletto’s Café and secure a meeting with the influential Mustafa Bey. Lyra cites Oxford’s Dr. Makepeace and Bud Schlesinger to establish trust and requests advice for reaching Karamakan and its red building.

Mustafa Bey cautions against the journey, describes overland bandits and ferocious aerial predators, and alludes to the rule “traveler by land, dæmon by water.” Then he quietly exposes Lyra’s disguise, names her Lyra Silvertongue, and warns they are being watched. Lyra reveals her belief that the red building opens into the source-world of the special roses. Mustafa Bey recounts the long-stable, guild-brokered rose trade, a unique rose color, and an agent’s rapturous report of a second, one-way door. He demonstrates rapid arbitrage, turning Lyra’s single gold coin into profit through swift exchanges.

When Lyra asks about Ionides, Mustafa Bey identifies him as Rashid Xenakis, a disgraced former mathematics professor and seasoned spy, cautioning that Rashid may have his own motives if he guides her farther. Noting subtle destabilization in trusted systems, Mustafa Bey offers fast, safe passage by his new international buses and a network of agents, in exchange for Lyra’s written reports. He provides a trilingual letter of introduction sealed with his signet, and Lyra accepts.

Elsewhere, the Tashbulak research station once home to Dr. Hassall lies wrecked by the men from the mountains; villagers bury the dead and salvage what survives. Chen, the camel-herder who once guided Strauss and Hassall, returns repeatedly, scavenges supplies, and frightens others away by staging hauntings, becoming master of the ruins.
