Chapter Thirteen: A Spy in the House of God
Overview
At Brande’s lecture, the philosopher dies onstage, but his dæmon horrifyingly persists, is seized, and later vanishes under Delamare’s interrogation, revealing she was not truly his. Delamare exploits the crisis: he shapes a sanitizing public narrative, eyes rewriting Brande’s ideas for doctrine, and readies a trap for Lyra in Baku.
Summary
Leenart Karpelin, Oakley Street’s agent in the Magisterium, attends Gottfried Brande’s sparsely promoted lecture in Geneva. Brande begins powerfully but collapses mid-sentence and dies instantly. Shock follows when his German shepherd dæmon does not vanish; she panics, flees, and soldiers of the Office of Right Duty violently capture her with a wire noose.
Karpelin witnesses the chaos and later reports the scene and public reaction. The Magisterium’s crowd control and fear intensify as rumors spread of the dæmon’s continued existence and haunting.
Marcel Delamare personally interrogates the injured dæmon in a secure room. Realizing she was not truly Brande’s dæmon, he probes in German while his owl dæmon tries Persian. The creature, in agony and shame, murmurs “Nichts” and then vanishes, confirming the deception.
Delamare swiftly crafts the official narrative: apoplexy and simultaneous deaths under Magisterium care. Karpelin’s dispatch notes the manipulation, the planned preservation of Brande’s text, and Delamare’s uncharacteristic disarray.
In private, Delamare sees opportunity in Brande’s notes—considering rewriting them to serve Magisterial aims—and turns back to strategy against Lyra, expecting her arrival in Baku soon and intending a trap.
