Chapter One: Beings of Another Kind

Overview

Lyra meets Nur Huda in the moonlit ruins and learns from unseen beings that the red building is a doorway to another world and of the alkahest, a destroyer of bonds. Lyra frees Nur Huda’s dæmon using the alethiometer’s needle, but a one-eyed man steals the alethiometer before a giant lion-eagle seizes him. Lyra retains the needle and glass, reunites girl and dæmon, and rests to continue her search for Pan.

Summary

In the moonlit ruins of Madinat al-Qamar, Lyra finds Nur Huda, who is separated from her dæmon Jamal and haunted by whispering voices. Nur Huda reports that Pan met her and foretold Lyra’s arrival, and that a one‑eyed desert man captured Jamal while hiding from a colossal hunting bird.

Following the voices to a forum, Lyra listens as they address her alone, claiming to be beings “from the gulfs between the good numbers.” They reveal that the red building in Karamakan is a doorway into another world and mention the alkahest, “the destroyer of bonds.” Lyra presses for Jamal’s location and is directed to the treasury behind her.

Descending into the ruined treasury, Lyra finds a one‑eyed man asleep with Jamal trapped in a rough cage. Lacking tools, she opens her alethiometer, removes its needle—metal akin to the subtle knife—and slices the steel mesh, freeing Jamal. The man wakes, struggles with Lyra, and, after she stabs his arm with the needle to break free, he grabs the alethiometer and flees.

Before Lyra can pursue, an immense lion‑eagle creature swoops down and carries the man away, along with the alethiometer. Lyra keeps hold of the precious needle and the glass. She reunites Jamal with Nur Huda, who, overjoyed, resolves to search for her family and encourages Lyra to find Pan and a new home.

Lyra returns to camp where Abdel Ionides questions her story of voices and a lion‑bird. Exhausted, she sleeps and dreams of Pan returning as she murmurs her new understanding: the red building is a window into the roses’ world.
