Overview
Bonneville, hampered yet scheming, senses Delamare’s growing control as the President gags Council communications and readies a “holy campaign” in Central Asia. Lyra and Malcolm reconnect via resonating lodestones; Pan is safe, and Malcolm plans escape from Damāvand after placating the gryphon queen. Parmentier uncovers an NMT-shrouded explosion at Les Diablerets, tied to La Maison Juste and a rumored door.
Summary
In Aleppo, Olivier Bonneville, recovering with an injured dæmon, uses Trepka’s Alethiometrica Explicata to track Lyra and to probe Geneva politics, finding Marcel Delamare consolidating control over the Supreme Council. His attempts with a new, more powerful reading method falter, seemingly blocked by his physical state and by Delamare’s enforced secrecy among Council members.
In Geneva, five Council members—the Dean of the College of Bishops, Karl von Landsberg, Mariette Seidel, Julius Morschach, and Georges Parmentier—privately discuss Delamare’s impending announcement of a “holy campaign” to destroy an unnamed site in Central Asia. Disturbed by the President’s unilateral diplomacy and gag rules, they resolve to investigate discreetly before confronting him.
At sea, Lyra sails from Baku to Krasnovodsk and opens a forwarded parcel from Oakley Street: a resonating lodestone slate. Through it, she and Malcolm communicate in real time. Malcolm reveals he is a guarded “guest” at Damāvand with Pan, working gold from Lyra’s stolen alethiometer to placate the gryphon queen Shahrnavāz while preserving the instrument’s workings. He reports a witch seeking alliance with the gryphons against advancing Magisterium forces. They share relief, confirm Ionides is with Lyra, and hint at escape by gryphon once Malcolm finishes.
Meanwhile, Parmentier, prodded by his dæmon Sylvie, visits General Ravignac to investigate a recent explosion above Les Diablerets. Ravignac recounts that a Guard officer, likely wearing a Chasseurs Alpins beret with a lamp badge, set off a blast that killed or disappeared a forester, and that an NMT (Noli me tangere) order silenced inquiries—orders historically linked to La Maison Juste, now effectively Delamare. Ravignac recalls local lore of a doorway in the forest and a past visit by the scholar Beamish, hinting the blast targeted a liminal site.
Across these threads, Delamare’s tightening grip, a looming “holy campaign,” covert tests at a rumored door, and Lyra’s renewed link to Malcolm and Pan raise the stakes toward war, secrecy, and a hoped-for reunion.
