Chapter Three: Towards Aleppo

Overview

Lyra departs Madinat al-Qamar with Abdel Ionides, concealing the alethiometer needle and resolving to reach Aleppo. Their talk on imagination contrasts with her concrete aim to visit Marletto’s.

Meanwhile, Ghazarian (as Colonel Grigorian) extracts the wounded Malcolm from prison and drives toward Aleppo; Delamare leans on Thuringia Potash over evidence tying them to the Tashbulak raid. Colonel Schreiber uses thermobaric charges to fragment a doorway, killing a bystander and apparently reducing access. Malcolm learns of a secret Brytish–Magisterium alliance and receives a communication stone from Glenys.

Summary

Before dawn, Lyra wakes by the ruins of Madinat al-Qamar, grieving the lost alethiometer yet newly calm, and pockets the alethiometer needle when changing shirts. With Abdel Ionides, she discusses gryphons, the elusive alkahest, and the nature of imagination, while fixing on Aleppo and Marletto’s Café as her next step to follow Pantalaimon east.

In Küçüklü prison, the governor dithers over disease fears until Colonel Grigorian arrives, demands all files, and removes the wounded Dr. Martin Peters—Malcolm Polstead—along with his effects. During the transfer, Asta slips back to Malcolm.

In Geneva, Marcel Delamare, fresh from a successful London visit, confronts Thuringia Potash’s Emil Sundberg with photograms tying TP to the Tashbulak raid. He demands real answers and intelligence on the “men from the mountains,” noting leaders Zafar Sayadov and Leila Pervani, while planning to control both them and TP.

In the Alps, Colonel Schreiber sets synchronized thermobaric grenades on both sides of a doorway. The blast kills a passerby and leaves only ragged pinholes where the door had been, apparently impeding passage. Schreiber cleans up and departs for Geneva, satisfied.

On the road at night, Ghazarian reveals Oakley Street’s Christabel status and that he was sent to recover Malcolm. They head for Aleppo to seek Lyra and contacts like Mustafa Bey. Malcolm experiences his recurring “spangled ring” aura, and he and Ghazarian witness a savage aerial battle high above the desert. Ghazarian informs Malcolm of a secret Brytish–Magisterium deployment; before sleep overtakes him, Malcolm receives from Ghazarian a palm-sized stone from Glenys for covert contact.
