Chapter Twenty: The Sermon
Overview
Delamare’s electrifying sermon launches a holy war, recasts sin as an external invasion, and brands Lyra an enemy, tightening the Magisterium’s grip. Elsewhere, Malcolm devises a silver-moon amulet to counter Sorush and seeks the gryphon queen’s aid. Mustafa Bey’s assassination collapses Silk Roads stability, nullifying Lyra’s protection as she’s stranded in Baku.
Summary
In Geneva’s cathedral, Marcel Delamare delivers a commanding sermon to the High Council and a packed congregation. He reframes Marisa’s past and Lyra’s birth as a saga of seduction and sin, then claims literal breaches in the world’s fabric caused by original sin. Delamare declares a holy war to seal a source of spiritual evil in Central Asia and publicly names Lyra Belacqua as aiding the enemy.
Georges Parmentier, seated with Professor Marianne Seidel and the ethicist Duclos, gauges the crowd’s awed silence and fears Delamare’s grip on them. Seidel calls him mad; Parmentier concedes Delamare has the congregation. Duclos questions the doctrine of evil invading from outside the world. Amid growing clamor, Parmentier chooses to leave quietly for the station.
In the gryphon queen’s mountain, Malcolm, recovering from his wound, continues metalwork: reshaping the alethiometer’s gold case into a circlet. Learning from Gulya about the invisible sorcerer Sorush—shielded by a distorting mirror and fire-spirits—Malcolm consults the poem of Jahan and Rukhsana, finding Sorush’s weakness: moonlight. He forges a plan to craft a silver crescent amulet and gathers fine abrasive, oil, and small bellows from the indentured jeweler Tamaz Khuroshvili.
Malcolm prepares to request a private audience with Queen Shahrnavāz, insisting Gulya help secure it, intending to use silver, not gold, against Sorush. He misses Pan’s counsel but proceeds.
Meanwhile, Lyra’s ferry, forced back to Baku by storm, docks in torrential rain. She and Ionides sense turmoil in the city but learn nothing concrete. In Aleppo, Mustafa Bey is assassinated by a bodyguard, shattering confidence across the Silk Roads; contracts and payments unravel, banks and markets panic. Lyra’s prized letter of protection from Mustafa Bey becomes worthless as she unknowingly drafts a report to the dead merchant, then turns to the resonating lodestone to write to Malcolm.
