Chapter Fifteen: An Island in the Flood
Overview
In a raging storm, Malcolm rescues witch-queen Tilda Vasara from gryphon attackers and brings her before Queen Shahrnavāz. Tilda reports failing winds and tainted air tied to deeper, inner-kingdom harm. With Master Ruzbeh naming “alkahest” and explosions near sacred sites, Malcolm proposes a gryphon–witch–human alliance to protect inter-world openings.
Summary
Malcolm examines Lyra’s damaged alethiometer, preserving the simple internal mechanism and noting the absent needle. Glenys Godwin’s lodestone warns of betrayal, sharpening his anxiety. A violent storm erupts over Damāvand; amid lightning and rain, gryphons launch into the gale.
Malcolm and Pantalaimon spot a witch racing the winds toward the mountain, pursued by gryphons. She downs two attackers with arrows before Malcolm and Pantalaimon haul her over the parapet to safety. Malcolm recognizes her as Tilda Vasara, the witch-queen he met during the great flood.
Confronted by the vizier and guards, Malcolm asserts protocol and escorts Tilda to an audience with Queen Shahrnavāz. In the great chamber, Tilda reports failing winds, tainted air, strange migrations, and lurid skies troubling all northern witches.
Pantalaimon frames the crisis as touching both the outer world and the inner kingdom—the secret commonwealth. Queen Shahrnavāz summons Master Ruzbeh, who recounts rising reports of atmospheric depletion near sulfurous or explosive ground activity and mentions the enigmatic term “alkahest.”
Tilda describes soldiers blasting near a sacred spring and killing a shaman; witches retaliated, yet motives remained unclear. Malcolm links the blasts to the Magisterium’s campaign to close inter-world openings, with “men from the mountains” and commercial interests like Thuringia Potash as potential allies. He argues the closures, not merely explosions, imperil the air.
Malcolm urges an alliance of gryphons, witches, and informed humans to protect the openings. With stakes defined—decaying air, threatened passages between worlds, and the Magisterium’s assaults—Queen Shahrnavāz considers the proposal as the storm rages outside.
