Chapter Seven: The Orange Tree

Overview

Recovering in an Aleppo embassy villa, Malcolm discovers his stone is a paired lodestone and reports to Glenys Godwin. Abdel Ionides reveals Thuringia Potash’s failure to synthesize rose oil and provides a leaked Magisterium speech denouncing imagination. He leads Malcolm toward Lyra’s trail after a police raid, while Olivier Bonneville, wounded, brings the Magisterium—Nuncio Gerhardt and Dr. Leila Pervani—down on Lyra and Ionides.

Summary

Malcolm recuperates at a Brytish Embassy villa in Aleppo, studying a Tashbulak file and idly drawing on a matte, green-black stone. The marks vanish and are replaced by Glenys Godwin’s writing: the stone is a resonating lodestone paired with hers in Hemel Hempstead. Malcolm reports his findings and intentions to go east; Godwin rebukes his disobedience but keeps the link open.

Abdel Ionides arrives, warning that Olivier Bonneville wants Malcolm dead, and probes Malcolm about the Rusakov field. Ionides recounts his suppressed research: Dust’s field strength varies with human attention, implying pervasive consciousness—an idea authorities forbade. He explains Thuringia Potash’s failed bid to synthesize Karamakan rose oil, whose decisive molecule evades replication like a double‑slit paradox. Ionides produces a leaked text of the Magisterium President’s imminent speech condemning imagination.

Ionides then reveals his client is Lyra Silvertongue and offers to take Malcolm to her. They reach the Hotel de las Palmas amid chaos from a recent police raid; Lyra is gone. Ionides says he last saw her at the Brazilian Embassy garden and leads Malcolm onward, supporting Malcolm’s injured leg with a walking stick.

In parallel, Olivier Bonneville, bruised and carrying his injured hawk dæmon, reports to Father Gerhardt, the Magisterial Nuncio, where Dr. Leila Pervani is present. Humiliated, Olivier admits he fought Lyra in the embassy garden and names Abdel Ionides as her guide, urging his arrest. He adds that Lyra’s dæmon was not with her. Gerhardt dismisses Olivier to “clean up” and prepares to pursue Lyra and Ionides, with Pervani observing and the Magisterium now mobilized.
