Chapter Twenty-One: The Clean Wind of God
Overview
Riots engulf Baku after Mustafa Bey’s assassination, forcing Lyra and Ionides to hide and plan a quiet escape as the Silk Roads’ order collapses. At Damāvand, Malcolm confronts Queen Shahrnavāz, pledges to kill Sorush, and requests a gryphon escort. The sudden mass arrival of witches shifts the power dynamics decisively.
Summary
Dilyara methodically explores the sacked Tashbulak laboratories, recovering intact gases, cold stores, and specimens the raiders missed. Nearby, Chen dreams of rebuilding a great camel herd as wild males gather, while Lop Nor continues its erratic drift.
In Baku, Lyra exchanges messages with Malcolm. He admits the alethiometer cannot be restored but has reshaped its gold case, and reports Pan has left with Tilda toward Tashbulak. A sudden unrest sweeps the city; sirens, loudspeakers, and police clashes escalate into gunfire, water cannon, and tear gas that floods Lyra’s hotel room. Lyra and Asta struggle to breathe until they seal the window and improvise wet cloths.
Ionides arrives with grave news: Mustafa Bey has been killed. He explains the riots are spreading along the Silk Roads because commerce depended on Bey’s personal web of contracts; without him, order collapses and strongmen will seize assets. He suspects the Magisterium engineered both the murder and the coming appeal for order. Ionides advises Lyra to stay hidden and leave quietly when the streets calm.
Elsewhere, Malcolm faces Queen Shahrnavāz. Claiming mastery of gold’s memory, he presents the alethiometer’s case reborn as a circlet promised for Princess Lyra and asserts he can reach Sorush in the Caucasus, free captives, lift Gulya’s curse, and divert Sorush’s gold to the Queen. He demands the circlet and a gryphon escort to Karamakan in return. The Queen doubts Sorush can be killed, but Malcolm insists.
The palace is then overshadowed by the arrival of vast numbers of witches streaming toward Damāvand. Gryphon guards form ranks as the witches glide through, transforming the balance of power. The Queen acknowledges Malcolm has altered how things are seen, and they move to receive the visitors.
