Chapter Twenty-Six: The Hard Problem
Overview
Lyra wakes among mustering gryphons and witches as Malcolm crowns her with a circlet forged from her ruined alethiometer, consolidating respect and purpose. Tuuli Latvala reveals Serafina’s death and joins their cause. Meanwhile, Delamare coerces Bonneville’s perilous new method to locate Lyra. Pan flies east with Tilda, Dilyara hears ominous visitors, and Lyra and Malcolm depart with Gulya toward Karamakan.
Summary
Lyra wakes amid a growing encampment of witches and gryphons, reflecting with Asta on imagination and the lost certainty she once felt. Malcolm arrives radiant with purpose and crowns Lyra with a delicate circlet he crafted from the twisted case of her stolen alethiometer, citing respect from gryphons, honor for Lyra, and his own resolve. They turn to planning their journey toward the desert.
Elsewhere, Delamare confronts Olivier Bonneville, seizes the alethiometer, and orders him to reveal Lyra’s location under guard and the oversight of Dr. Lacroix. Bonneville performs his punishing “new method,” staging weakness and vomiting blood, and claims Lyra is on a sea cliff near a white-and-red-banded lighthouse with a jetty, accompanied by a man. Delamare keeps the instrument and has Bonneville moved to rest, while Bonneville privately rages over his destroyed device.
High above the Caspian, Pan clings to Tilda Vasara’s cloud-pine, wrestling with guilt over leaving Lyra and fear of entering the red building. They land on the sea’s eastern shore to rest until daylight.
At Tashbulak, Dilyara, sleeping near Strauss, wakes to an unfamiliar truck. Unseen men probe the station doors, speak in authoritative tones, then depart, leaving her chilled and uneasy as she returns to bed.
Back on the headland, Lyra meets Tuuli Latvala, who reveals she is Serafina Pekkala’s daughter by Farder Coram and that Serafina was murdered by a missionary, whom Tuuli avenged. They grieve, then discuss the campaign’s aim to stop the forces damaging air and seasons. At Prince Keshvād’s command, ranks of gryphons launch eastward. Lyra and Malcolm mount Gulya and lift off, heading toward Karamakan and the next stage of their quest.
