Chapter Thirty-Two: The Pieces Gather on the Board
Overview
Tamar Sharadze seizes control of Mustafa Bey’s network, formalizing it into a company with its own currency, while Leila Pervani feeds her a lucrative but fabricated Karamakan story. Pantalaimon tracks Olivier Bonneville toward the red building and learns he is Lyra’s half-brother and Delamare is her uncle. In flight, Lyra and Malcolm clarify their philosophy about Dust, the “Rose Field,” and the need to keep interworld openings. Far east, Tilda witnesses Delamare’s army drown in Lop Nor’s shifting marshes.
Summary
After Mustafa Bey’s assassination, Tamar Sharadze asserts control, prioritizing secure routes and contact with the Magisterium while investigating the assassin. Recognizing trust can’t hinge on one name, she founds the Mustafa Bey Company, standardizes a new currency bearing Mustafa’s image, and plans modern infrastructure, including a freeway that would replace Marletto’s Café.
In Samarkand, Leila Pervani visits, reporting Delamare’s advance toward the Tien Shan and a plan to cross Lop Nor. Claiming Mustafa had backed a “Karamakan project,” Leila spins a detailed, enticing but false scheme involving Thuringia Potash, which Sharadze diligently records. Leila also displays a new banknote, confirming the company’s monetary reform, before departing.
Near Tashbulak, Olivier Bonneville steals a horse and heads toward the red building while Delamare’s main force advances east guided by Abdel Ionides and Delamare waits with engineers for a signal. From the storage roof, Pantalaimon, with Dilyara, spots Bonneville and sets off in pursuit.
Aloft on Gulya, Lyra and Malcolm keep watch through the night and discuss alkahest, Dust, and the Rusakov field—renaming it the Rose Field. Lyra recounts the subtle knife, Will, and the angel’s command to close windows, then argues the imagination and Dust demand open “windows” between worlds, invoking Gödel to claim systems need gaps to stay alive. Malcolm agrees in spirit.
Tracking Bonneville, Pan observes his clumsy camp and gently questions Bonneville’s injured hawk dæmon, Arethusa. Pan learns that Olivier is Lyra’s half-brother (child of Mrs. Coulter), making Marcel Delamare their uncle; Delamare allegedly framed Olivier’s father, and Olivier rides seeking him. Arethusa adds that Lyra’s malignant grandmother wants Lyra captured “to play with.” Pan slips away toward the red building, alarmed.
Farther east, Tilda Vasara scouts Lop Nor and watches Delamare’s soldiers, ignorant of the lake’s treachery, push into mires and quicksands. The marshes engulf them indiscriminately, and Tilda bears witness with sorrow as the crossing collapses.
