Chapter Twelve: Resonating Lodestone
Overview
Malcolm, captive atop Damāvand, opens lodestone contact with Oakley Street and learns Beamish is dead, Schreiber is bombing openings, and Delamare is preparing for war while showcasing Gottfried Brande. Tasked to mend Lyra’s shattered alethiometer, Malcolm secures tools from imprisoned craftsmen.
Meanwhile, Lyra travels east with Abdel Ionides, who recounts his past with Dr Leila Pervani and her covert alignment with the mountain men to stay close to Dust, hinting at the alkahest. The stakes around openings, gold, and war intensify.
Summary
Back in their quarters atop Damāvand, Malcolm confirms the smashed alethiometer is Lyra’s. As he inspects its crushed case, missing glass frame, bent hands, cracked dial, and absent self-moving needle, a lodestone message arrives from Oakley Street detailing a global list of anomalous openings and Schreiber’s partial success destroying some with thermobaric bombs. Malcolm replies from captivity, explaining the gryphons’ realm and his intent to repair the instrument to secure release.
Further OS updates report Beamish’s death on Delamare’s orders and an impending Magisterium push toward war with HMG’s support. Malcolm outlines that openings lead to other worlds, asks about Lop Nor, and describes gryphon obsession with gold. He decides to separate the alethiometer’s workings from its gold case and requests tools.
With help from Darius, a tongueless indentured servant, and guidance from the young gryphon Gulya, Malcolm reaches Tamaz Khuroshvili, a Georgian jeweler-prisoner. Despite fear, Tamaz yields precision tools and linseed oil. OS urges “Follow the money,” which Malcolm links to his broader mission amid gryphon gold supremacy.
As Malcolm begins disassembly, OS reports firsthand reconnaissance of a North Wales opening and political moves: a Corporate Indemnity Act, a Geneva doctrine conference, and rumors that Gottfried Brande will speak. In Geneva, Delamare instructs his secretary Matthieu Crespin to host Brande ceremoniously to contain his influence and delays his own casus belli speech pending alliances.
On the road east, Lyra travels by luxury bus with Abdel Ionides. Ionides recounts his love affair and research partnership with Dr Leila Pervani in Alexandria, their work on Dust and the Rusakov field, ensuing scandal and exile, and Pervani’s covert involvement with the mountain men to stay near Dust’s destruction efforts. He alludes to the alkahest as a crucial concept. Exhausted, Lyra eats and falls asleep as the bus continues into the mountains.
