Chapter Thirty-Four: The Alkahest at Work

Overview

Pan confronts Bonneville near the red building and forces a fragile truce as Delamare closes in with a bomb. Inside the mural hall, Delamare arrives and his owl captures Pan. In the rose world, Lyra articulates the alkahest as money dissolving human and dæmon bonds, gives her circlet to Mrs. Butler, and heads back toward the doorway.

Summary

After tracking Olivier Bonneville across grassland, Pan reveals himself, warning Bonneville that Marcel Delamare is close and might kill Lyra. Pan hints at other worlds and at Bonneville’s kinship to Lyra, provoking unease. An engine approaches from behind; Pan urges Bonneville to abandon the horse and hurry to the red building’s door.

They enter the great hall ahead of Delamare. Bonneville is awestruck by the murals, but Pan drives him toward the far door. Delamare arrives with soldiers and a bomb, silhouetted in the entrance, as the engine dies outside.

Meanwhile, in the rose world, Lyra and Malcolm watch soldiers escort the Butlers away. Lyra insists on staying near the doorway for Pan and explains her realization: the alkahest is money’s universal solvent, dissolving bonds—traditions, livelihoods, and above all the bond between people and dæmons. She struggles with nuances like Mustafa Bey’s road but concludes profit reduces roses and oil to mere value units. She admits placing her circlet in Mrs. Butler’s knitting, and she and Malcolm head back toward the doorway.

Back in the hall, Delamare’s white-owl dæmon scouts the rafters while soldiers, led by Colonel Schreiber, hack the frame to force the bomb inside. Bonneville sprints for the far door but is checked by the owl’s distance limit. As Schreiber positions the sled between columns and Delamare advances, the owl regains range and silently swoops, seizing Pan in her claws as Bonneville fumbles at his rucksack.
