Chapter 76 (The tangible expression of the human)

Overview

Anna flees the besieged Mentat School through the sangroves with Erasmus’s core, surviving a Butlerian pursuer with Erasmus’s defenses and meeting Draigo, who spirits her away to safety. At dawn, Manford stages Gilbertus’s public execution. Gilbertus refuses to recant, bargains only for his students’ future, and dies, leaving the Mentat legacy to endure.

Summary

By night, Anna navigates the sangrove swamps with Erasmus guiding her via spy-eyes and the glowing memory core strapped to her body. He electrifies waterways to kill razorjaws and mask their passage. When a Butlerian scout corners Anna, ancestral whisper-voices trigger instinctive moves; Erasmus then shocks the channel, killing the pursuer. He directs Anna toward unexpected help.

Before dawn, Anari Idaho visits prisoner Gilbertus to warn of his imminent execution. Gilbertus remains calm, having meditated and resolved to accept death if it protects his school. He rejects Butlerian dogma, noting Manford’s rigid path, and prepares himself mentally rather than physically.

Draigo, evading Butlerian hunters, returns toward the school and encounters Anna, who confirms his identity and mission. They agree to flee together with the Erasmus core. Draigo promises secrecy and vows not to deliver them to Salusa, intending instead to take them to a hidden VenHold refuge. As daylight grows, he guides Anna to his concealed ship.

At sunrise, guards bring Gilbertus before Manford’s assembled camp and the watching Mentat students. Gilbertus publicly denounces his past service to the Butlerians yet extracts Manford’s pledge to spare the school, even if “reeducated.” Trusting his students’ training to outlast indoctrination, he kneels before Anari.

Refusing to recant, Gilbertus quips that he looks forward to debating God. He withdraws into his cherished memories—especially a peaceful life on Lectaire and love for Jewelia—while Anari performs the beheading. As Gilbertus dies, Draigo escapes with Anna and the Erasmus core, preserving a crucial secret while Manford claims control over the Mentat School’s future.
