Raquella, aged and in rapid decline despite melange and her Reverend Mother control, privately assesses her failing biology each morning. She recognizes she can no longer sustain the façade of health while the Sisterhood remains divided between Wallach IX and Salusa Secundus. Choosing a successor is urgent, with Valya Harkonnen and Dorotea as the clearest but flawed options.

On a customary hike up Laojin Cliff with Sister Mentat Fielle, Raquella admits she is dying and fears the Sisterhood will splinter further after her death. Fielle’s Mentat projections predict civil war and possible Imperial interference if a leadership vacuum forms, likely sparked by Valya or Dorotea.

Pressed for solutions, Fielle proposes leveraging the Sisters’ enduring love for Raquella: demand immediate reconciliation, and, if necessary, shock both factions into unity through the threat—or act—of martyrdom. Raquella accepts the logic, concluding her death might serve as a final unifying act if reason fails.
