The episode showcases Manford’s ruthless discipline and propaganda.
Summary
Before dawn, Manford Torondo rides Anari Idaho’s shoulders toward Dove’s Haven, intent on making an example of alleged VenHold-backed smuggling and spice use. With thirteen Swordmasters and a hundred followers, he brings Rolli Escon, head of EsconTran, to witness Butlerian resolve and court his support.
Manford and Escon discuss rerouting EsconTran ships to aid Butlerian worlds despite the embargo. Escon presses for surcharges and a public endorsement; Manford accepts, dismissing safety concerns and concluding the bargain so he can proceed with the operation.
Deacon Harian reports the town is infiltrated and ready. As dawn breaks, Swordmasters seize the three mayors while followers rouse the populace. Harian produces cinnamon-colored spice as evidence of illicit trade with VenHold, and Manford frames the action as a moral “lesson,” not punishment.
On Manford’s order, Anari beheads the silent First Mayor first, and Swordmasters execute the other two, leaving the most fearful for last. Manford declares the deaths a small price for righteousness as followers limit damage under his control, then withdraw.
Rolli Escon, shaken by the spectacle, lingers; Manford coldly labels the violence a necessary teaching. The raid both cements Escon’s logistical support and reinforces Butlerian discipline by terrorizing would-be violators under the embargo.
