Chapter 23 (Every hammer has the innate capacity to strike a nail)
Overview
Draigo Roget transports Taref and fellow Arrakis Freemen to Kolhar, immersing them in offworld realities—abundant water, snow, and VenHold’s Navigator program. After cultural shock and cleanup, Draigo begins training them to blend into rival shipyards and quietly sabotage engines, escalating VenHold’s covert war against competitors.
Summary
Taref leaves Arrakis with fellow Freemen, thrilled and overwhelmed as their shuttle rises toward a VenHold spacefolder. He reassures Lillis and Shurko that leaving the desert is freedom and destiny, despite their tribe’s likely disapproval. Taref reflects on his lifelong frustration with sietch strictures and his hunger for the wider universe.
Aboard the ship, Draigo Roget outlines expectations: the Freemen must blend in, surrender stillsuits temporarily, adopt hygiene, and dress like workers. Shurko bristles at perceived insults, but Taref defuses the tension, committed to the opportunity Draigo offers. They are shocked by wasteful-seeming water use and humid air as they bathe and don clean jumpsuits.
Arriving on Kolhar, sleet and snow astonish the group. Draigo dismisses the novelty and pivots to their purpose. He shows them proto-Navigators immersed in melange gas, explaining VenHold’s reliance on spice and the Navigators’ role in folding space. The grotesque transformation unsettles Taref, yet his curiosity and resolve to explore prevail.
Draigo then tours the massive spaceport, immersing them in noise, machinery, and ship construction. He stresses that they must appear at ease in such environments to gain employment with rival firms like EsconTran. Taref asserts they can learn as they once learned spice machinery.
Finally, Draigo reveals the mission’s core: VenHold will train the Freemen in basic shipyard tasks and teach subtle methods to induce critical system failures. The recruits will pass as ordinary workers, then sabotage competitor vessels, becoming covert agents in VenHold’s expanding commercial conflict.
