Chapter 44 (Every person has a powerful urge to return home)

Leaving Lankiveil behind, Vorian Atreides undertakes a quiet pilgrimage across the Imperium, ultimately descending to Caladan. Haunted by centuries of loss and estrangement, he resolves to confront his past and seek connection with the Atreides lineage he left behind with Leronica and their sons, Estes and Kagin.

Walking the coastal cliffs toward his old fishing village, Vorian reflects on former happiness and the distance time has imposed. In town he notes an inaccurate statue of his Jihad-era self, a public myth that does not match the man who has returned in anonymity.

At Ackley’s Inn, Vorian buys kelpbeer for two fishermen, Engelo and Danson, and casually inquires about local Atreides. They identify Shander Atreides, a prosperous net-mender who took in nephews Willem and Orry after a hurricane killed their parents; they also mention the family’s start-up stake came from Vorian himself.

After Vorian checks into a room, Shander arrives, curious about the inquiries. Over hours of conversation, Vorian traces Shander’s lineage back to Kagin and confirms Willem and Orry descend from Estes. As Vorian recounts detailed memories, Shander moves from skepticism to belief that this is truly the legendary Vorian Atreides.

Shander warmly invites Vorian to live with him and the boys, insisting the family home is effectively Vorian’s, given the old financial help. Vorian, valuing autonomy and wary of intruding, declines for now but affirms their shared bond. He intends to remain nearby, gauge how things go, and, if it works, build his own place—beginning a careful reconnection with his Caladan roots.
