Chapter 11 (With human imagination)

Overview

On Denali, Ptolemy advances a project to place failed Navigator brains into upgraded cymek walkers, forging a new anti‑Butlerian army. Haunted by Manford’s murder of his colleague, he seeks vengeance and leadership of this force. Administrator Noffe reports ten walkers ready but declines Ptolemy’s proposal to become a cymek himself.

Summary

Ptolemy reflects in the toxic mists of Denali on the peril and promise of human invention, blaming Butlerian fanaticism for past ruin. Inside Venport’s protected lab, he tends enlarged, living brains salvaged from failed Navigators, communicating with them via implanted thoughtrodes while they drift in confusion awaiting purpose.

He recalls Zenith, where he and his Tlulaxa partner Dr. Elchan advanced limb‑replacement using knowledge traced to forbidden cymek tech. Hoping to sway Manford Torondo with compassion, Ptolemy once offered the Butlerian leader advanced prosthetic legs. Instead, Manford’s followers destroyed the lab and burned Elchan alive, searing Ptolemy’s resolve to fight back.

Administrator Noffe arrives to report ten refurbished cymek walkers are ready for tests. Together they envision a “Time of Titans” reborn—without the hubris of Agamemnon and Ajax—guided by “enlightened” proto‑Navigator minds like Yabido Onel and Xinshop, and enhanced with new alloys, integrated weapons, and improved power transfer.

Driven by grief and rage, Ptolemy vows to turn the cymeks into guardians of progress and instruments against the Butlerians, even imagining leading them personally. He proposes that he and Noffe become cymeks once the process is perfected. Noffe, attached to his flawed human body, refuses, noting they have ample brains for trials. The chapter closes with their project poised to field a formidable, modernized cymek force.
