Chapter 48 (Evil is apparent to all)
Overview
After the Baridge uprising, Anari Idaho seizes a VenHold spacefolder and sends it to Lampadas, but the ship disappears in foldspace. Back on Lampadas, Anari presents proof of VenHold’s mutated Navigators and spice dependence. The Butlerian inner circle resolves to attack Venport’s Arrakis monopoly; Anari will reconnoiter with Manford’s double.
Summary
In the wake of the Baridge uprising, Anari Idaho consolidates Butlerian control, publicly toppling Deacon Kalifer and exposing a slain VenHold Navigator to inflame support. With Rolli Escon’s help, she outfits the captured VenHold spacefolder and dispatches a small crew to deliver it to Lampadas as a trophy.
The ship vanishes in foldspace like other EsconTran losses, frustrating Anari but not deterring her mission. She remains on Baridge to purge Machine Apologists and hesitant citizens, then departs on Escon’s vessel to return to Manford Torondo with urgent news.
On Lampadas, Manford convenes his inner circle—Deacon Harian, Sister Woodra, and housekeeper Ellonda present—so Anari can recount the uprising. She displays the image of the humanoid Navigator, prompting condemnation. Anari reports the tank immersion in concentrated melange and the ship’s spice cargo, arguing that melange bribery sustained Kalifer’s defiance.
Sister Woodra adds intelligence from Reverend Mother Dorotea: Venport Holdings and Combined Mercantiles secretly monopolize Arrakis spice. The group deduces that Venport’s many Navigators require immense spice supplies; breaking the Arrakis monopoly would cripple him.
Manford vows to travel to Arrakis to convert spice workers, but Anari argues EsconTran’s foldspace hazards make his travel reckless, citing the lost trophy ship despite her destruction of its computers. After debate, Anari proposes taking Manford’s trained double, carrying him to deliver the speech while Manford remains safe. Manford relents, ordering Anari to reconnoiter Arrakis with his double and find ways to destroy Venport’s operations.
