Chapter 35 (Every memory has a trigger)
Overview
Vorian Atreides works incognito on a Harkonnen whaleboat on Lankiveil, observing their hardships and earning their trust. Confronted with their debt and rivals, he secretly transfers funds to clear Harkonnen liabilities, enabling modernization and independence. Determined to remain unknown, Vorian departs, seeking quiet atonement and considering a return to Caladan.
Summary
Vorian Atreides lives anonymously among the Harkonnens on Lankiveil, working aboard a whaleboat to observe the family he once harmed. He blends in with the crew, learns the dangers of fur-whale hunting from Vergyl Harkonnen and chief mate Landon, and recalls past lives and losses that fuel his need to make amends.
As the crew harvests whales and processes the catch, Vorian notes the family’s financial fragility and the Bushnell rivals pressing in. He sees how failed ventures by Weller and Griffin Harkonnen worsened debts and how upgrades to nets, boats, and processing are essential for survival. He grows fond of Vergyl’s family, including protected son Danvis, deepening his sense of responsibility.
After returning to port in heavy rain, Vorian acts on his resolve. He sends a coded message to a banker on Kolhar, instructing an anonymous transfer to pay off all Harkonnen debts, enabling fleet repairs, spaceport rebuilding, and better offworld distribution—enough to resist Bushnell incursions.
Committed to secrecy and unwilling to seek forgiveness or credit, Vorian plans to depart before the funds arrive. He tells himself he cannot undo all past damage but can start setting the Harkonnens on stable footing. As he prepares to leave, he considers traveling to Caladan, continuing his quiet quest for atonement.
