Chapter 45 (I keep my eyes open and observe)

Arriving ahead of a VenHold relief ship, Anari Idaho quietly organizes Butlerian loyalists on Baridge, bypassing the turncoat Deacon Kalifer and rallying residents embittered by the embargo’s suffering. At night meetings under auroras, she frames the task as both punishment for betrayal and a blow against VenHold’s corrupting influence.

When the VenHold ship appears with fanfare to mark Baridge’s return to “civilized society,” Kalifer publicly renounces strict Butlerian austerity. Spurred by a fervent vision of Rayna Butler and armed with prearranged red banners as a signal, Anari triggers a surge of faithful and sympathetic townspeople. The riot overruns VenHold workers, wrecks cargo, and spirals into citywide violence.

Kalifer is seized by the mob before Anari can reach him; they mutilate and kill him along with the governing council, while any resisters are attacked. Anari leads forces into the primary spacefolder, ordering minimal damage so Manford can claim the vessel. She personally butchers two surrendering human pilots and commands the destruction of onboard navigation calculators upon discovering prohibited computers.

Guided to an upper deck, Anari confronts a sealed tank containing a mutated Navigator. She vents the chamber, flooding the ship with melange gas, then smashes the tank; the Navigator suffocates outside its spice-rich environment. She orders the body dragged through the streets as a warning, transforming the atrocity into propaganda.

Amid the wreckage, Anari recognizes a critical vulnerability: VenHold’s Spacing Fleet depends on spice and these monstrous Navigators. Victorious on Baridge and now holding a captured ship, she contemplates striking at the source—Arrakis.
