Chapter 50 (Symbols are powerful motivators of human behavior)
Overview
Taref, rejected by his sietch yet loyal to VenHold, seizes a sudden chance in Arrakis City and assassinates Butlerian leader Manford Torondo. Anari Idaho flees with Manford’s body as chaos erupts. Returning to Kolhar, Taref reports the kill; Josef Venport celebrates and orders confirmation, expecting Butlerian collapse.
Summary
After failing to recruit from his former sietch, Taref treks back toward Arrakis City, conflicted by his tribe’s backwardness and his fading faith in VenHold’s promises. He resolves to honor his commitment to Directeur Venport by finding volunteers, even if through hollow persuasion.
In the city, as Taref observes spice shipments and steels himself to recruit, Anari Idaho appears bearing legless Butlerian leader Manford Torondo through the streets with followers. Recognizing Venport’s greatest enemy and the absence of shields among Butlerians, Taref impulsively draws a Maula pistol and shoots Manford in the head, killing him instantly.
Amid the stunned hush and ensuing panic, Anari seizes Manford’s body and flees. Taref discards the weapon, blends into the crowd, and slips away, convinced that this single act outweighs any failed recruitment. He decides to use VenHold credit for rest and depart on the next ship.
On Kolhar, Taref reports without recruits. When he announces the assassination, Draigo Roget withholds judgment pending verification, while Josef Venport, masking elation, praises Taref and predicts the Butlerian movement will crumble without its symbolic leader.
