Chapter 1 (What do all our accomplishments matter)
Overview
Headmaster Gilbertus Albans hosts Prince Roderick Corrino and Lady Orenna for a brief inspection of Anna Corrino’s care at the Mentat School on Lampadas. While Anna shows lucidity, a swamp creature kills a student, highlighting constant peril. Political tensions with Butlerians and VenHold loom, and Gilbertus hides the forbidden Erasmus memory core.
Summary
Headmaster Gilbertus Albans reflects on founding the isolated Mentat School on Lampadas and his careful neutrality amid rising Butlerian fervor and Imperial scrutiny. He disguises his age, conceals his connection to the robot Erasmus, and prepares for a sanctioned Imperial visit to assess Anna Corrino’s condition.
Gilbertus checks on Anna at the observatory. She engages in a playful, Mentat-style cascade calculation about the swamp’s ecology, then opts to meet her brother after collecting her thoughts. Meanwhile, trainees burn and clear a temporary landing zone in the fast-growing marsh.
Prince Roderick Corrino arrives with Lady Orenna aboard a military-shuttled craft, constrained by VenHold’s refusal to service Lampadas. Gilbertus outlines Anna’s stability and cautions against expecting miracles. The visitors debate Imperial limits with VenHold and the risks posed by nearby Butlerians; Gilbertus stresses the school’s neutrality and utility.
They meet Anna on the observatory. She presents as lucid and eager for a good visit. As Gilbertus touts the school’s defenses, a swamp reptile erupts from the water and drags a trainee to her death, provoking Orenna’s alarm and Roderick’s questions about external threats and hostage risks. Gilbertus promises Anna’s safety inside the walls and cites thorough defensive projections.
Orenna urges protection of Anna at all costs. Internally, Gilbertus acknowledges his far greater secret: the hidden Erasmus memory core within the school, a treasure whose protection endangers them more than any swamp hazard or political tension.
