Chapter 46 (Sometimes the best way to see the familiar is to go far from it)

Under orders from Directeur Venport, Taref returns to Arrakis City and finds it smaller and grubbier than he remembered, a sign of how offworld travel has changed his perspective. He mourns Shurko, notes his own softening away from desert hardness, and prepares to revisit his sietch to recruit Freemen for VenHold.

Draigo Roget equips Taref with a superior stillsuit and credentials. After blending with inexperienced Combined Mercantiles workers, Taref secures a crew assignment near his sietch and spends a week reacclimating to desert operations. He then sets out alone across the dunes, carefully rationing water and avoiding worms, and reaches the sietch exhausted but functional.

Inside, Taref announces he brings an opportunity. Naib Rurik and Taref’s brothers, Modoc and Golron, question him coldly. Taref describes worlds of abundant water and VenHold pay, and reveals Shurko died completing a mission. The family dismisses offworld politics, condemns Taref for abandoning sietch duties, and scorns the loss of Shurko’s water.

When Taref seeks a full sietch gathering, Rurik refuses, declaring Taref no longer belongs. Accused of reeking of civilization, Taref is ordered to leave and not return with his “nonsense.” Taref departs, recognizing he has outgrown the sietch even as his recruitment mission has failed.
