Chapter 55 (We are human not because of our physical form)

Overview

Ptolemy expands his cymek “Titan” program with new Navigator brains while Denali’s researchers prepare anti-Butlerian weapons. A crate of Westpher’s sabotage “crickets” escapes, igniting a shuttle fuel spill and catastrophically burning Administrator Noffe. As Suk doctors struggle to save Noffe, Ptolemy resolves to take a radical next step, deepening Denali’s turn to transhuman solutions.

Summary

Ptolemy, emboldened by recent successes on Arrakis and Lectaire, accelerates his Titan initiative on Denali. With new thoughtrode improvements and a shipment of ten failed Navigator brains from Kolhar, he readies additional cymek walkers. VenHold Suk doctors arrive to observe, while other Denali teams develop novel anti-Butlerian weapons, including Dr. Uli Westpher’s thumb-sized incendiary “crickets.”

Administrator Noffe oversees loading prototypes and munitions for shipment to Kolhar. As he inventories a crate of crickets, he discovers damage and sees several devices scuttle free. Simultaneously, workers report a fuel leak beneath the shuttle. A loose cricket reaches the fuel, strikes sparks with its legs, and triggers an explosion that engulfs Noffe.

Noffe is rushed to the infirmary with severe burns. The visiting Suk doctors employ life support and drugs, but Noffe writhes in pain despite a medical coma. The scene echoes Ptolemy’s trauma over Dr. Elchan’s death, intensifying his sense of helplessness despite his engineering triumphs.

Confronted with Noffe’s likely fatal injuries and his own failing lungs, Ptolemy decides hesitation is no longer possible. He tells the Suk doctors there is one more thing they can do and asks for their help, signaling his commitment to a drastic transhuman measure tied to his Titan work.
