51 Meryn
Overview
Meryn and Lucien jointly trigger visions that expose the gods behind the Tears: Lumina and Nocturn. They witness Lumina gifting a protective opal to a human child and Nocturn imprisoning Lumina in the tower.
Connecting these revelations with Meryn’s mother’s journals and Stark’s memory, they conclude the final Tear likely lies at the Faceless Goddess statue in Linsfall.
Summary
Wearing both family-necklace Tears together, Meryn and Lucien trigger a fractured vision. Meryn sees a radiant, golden-skinned woman—Lumina—pregnant and nonhuman. A shadowed, otherworldly man appears: Nocturn. They discuss a newborn daughter meant to link wolves and rule humans. Lumina weeps opaline tears into a crystal and places it on the baby, promising protection. Nocturn orders a Bonded woman and her direwolf to raise and guard the child.
Snapped back to the deck, Meryn reels at the name Lumina, long muttered by her mother and whispered in Meryn’s own vulnerable moments. She and Lucien then both touch the tower Tear, entering a second, clearer vision inside the tower restored. Lumina paces in anguish as Nocturn manifests from shadows, claims she weakened herself by giving, and declares she belongs to him. He dissolves into darkness, leaving Lumina weeping another opal; both figures are revealed as gods.
Meryn realizes the shadowed voice in her dreams and in the trial was Nocturn, not madness, mirroring her mother’s “ravings.” She retrieves her mother’s journals, filled with the names Lumina, Nocturn, and Astreon linked repeatedly. Lucien admits his first vision included Astreon and possibly Lumina as ancestors, though he withholds details.
Searching the journals, Meryn finds a compelling sketch of Lumina. She calls Stark, who recognizes it as the likeness of the Faceless Goddess statue in Linsfall. Concluding the rites are a roadmap and that the last Tear is tied to Lumina’s image, Meryn declares the final Tear’s likely location: the statue at Linsfall.
