36 Meryn
Overview
Meryn debates Lucien’s shocking offer to command Astreona’s forces, choosing to delay a decision while she gauges his intentions. She and Stark finally admit their feelings and consummate their bond. Their respite ends abruptly when Meryn senses Noemi’s terror through their bond, prompting an urgent return to the castle.
Summary
Reeling from Lucien’s offer of command over Astreona’s armies, Meryn takes a walk with Stark to clear her head. Outside Brightbane, they weigh the risks: Lucien’s hatred of Alistair aligns with their aims, but Stark fears a trap and future occupation of Nocturna. Meryn decides to stall for a few days to assess Lucien’s true intentions.
Tension shifts when Stark’s jealousy surfaces; Meryn challenges him, and Stark confesses he nearly lost her and that she has become his “right reason.” They finally acknowledge their mutual desire and trust, and their argument gives way to an intense, consensual encounter that cements their emotional bond.
Afterward, they rest together in the desert. Suddenly, Meryn is jolted by overwhelming fear and pain through her mental bonds—Noemi is in danger. Meryn and Stark dress hastily, summon their direwolves, and ride hard back toward the castle, abandoning the moment of peace for an urgent rescue.
