Summary
Back aboard Lucien’s ship, Meryn and her allies debate their next move. Venna and Noemi urge a return to Blumenfall to aid the remaining loyalists, but Lucien refuses, citing Alistair’s power, Killian’s Tear, and the unknown final Tear. Tensions flare when Lucien asserts command and proposes rallying Astreona—and marriage—while dismissing Stark’s objections.
As tempers rise, Meryn grips the opal Tear from the tower. It heats, snaps something within her, and unleashes shadow that transforms midair into radiant fractals. The energy strikes the tower island, which blossoms into sudden, lush life. Stunned, Meryn recalls her coronation rites and decodes them as a roadmap to the Tears: two crowns (rule), a voice (persuasion), right hand create, left hand destroy, two necklaces (protection). She concludes the final, unclaimed Tear embodies Destruction.
Recognizing the existential threat if Alistair or Killian claim it, Meryn rejects both Blumenfall and Astreona. The group agrees they must locate the final Tear first, despite Lucien’s continued insinuations about marriage and power-sharing.
Later, Meryn tries to rest, worried Stark won’t forgive her for the self-inflicted death in the tower. Stark joins her silently, protective but distant. In the pre-dawn, a storm’s rocking leads to a charged moment; they connect mentally, and Meryn experiences Stark’s anguish at watching her die and his fear of failing her.
Meryn insists her sacrifice was her choice, not his failure, and affirms trust and devotion. The emotional rift eases as Stark claims his role as protector without diminishing her agency. Their bond deepens into intimate closeness, signaling reconciliation and renewed unity before the hunt for the final Tear.
