44 Meryn

Fog conceals spiked rocks that tear at the ship as Meryn, Stark, and their Bonded scramble for footing. Lucien drops the sails and anchors, declaring there’s no safe path through the reefs. With the shore visible yet treacherous, Anassa insists they must swim, and despite Meryn’s terror and inexperience, the group prepares to ride their direwolves into the sea.

They leap overboard into numbing, violent surf. Waves and currents batter them sideways, and visibility vanishes in fog. Ephyse is swept backward, separating Noemi, who slips under. Feeling Noemi’s panic through the bonds, Meryn begins to lose herself until Anassa snaps her back. Cratos surges through the water; Stark hauls Noemi up as Cratos grips her arm, and Ephyse rejoins to help.

The survivors push through the final breakers and stagger onto a pebbled beach. As hypothermia threatens, a surge of island magic instantly dries and warms them, restoring strength and clearing the chill from their bodies and the wolves’ coats. The display confirms they are in a living, warded place that recognizes Bonded.

They approach the tower crowning a rocky hill, its stone seeming to shift at the edge of sight. At the entrance, a carved poem describes four martial archetypes moving as one, which the group interprets as the packs. Meryn presses the stone door; it grinds open easily to reveal a blue-glowing spiral stair that descends, not rises.

Accepting the island’s test and wary of further trials, Meryn leads the way downward, intent on reaching the Tear believed to be hidden within the tower’s depths.
