48 Meryn
Overview
Meryn revives after her self-sacrifice, straining bonds with Stark and the others. Atop the tower, her tears clear blood to reveal the mosaic and the hidden Goddess Tear, which she secures. As the island’s fog lifts, they rejoin Lucien’s ship. Power tilts: Meryn now holds three Tears to Lucien’s two.
Summary
Meryn jolts back to life in Stark’s arms, chest healed but drenched in her own blood. Stark’s anguish turns to anger over her self-stabbing, and Venna’s grief resurfaces, echoing Izabel’s death. Meryn argues the sacrifice was necessary to save them from the gas, acknowledging no one would have allowed it if discussed.
They realize they are no longer underground but atop the tower in a round, windowed chamber. Seeking the Tear, Meryn recognizes the room from her foresight but finds only grime and blood. Overwhelmed, she breaks down; her tears strike the floor, magically clearing blood to reveal the mosaic’s center and the hidden opal Tear.
Using cloth to avoid a vision, Meryn lifts the Tear. The group descends an ordinary stair, emerging to a cleared sea: fog and hazards vanish, and Lucien’s ship approaches unimpeded. Elias hails them; Noemi tersely notes Meryn “died.”
On shore, Meryn displays the Tear, while Lucien watches, calculating. With the new gem, Meryn now holds three of the Seven Tears to Lucien’s two, subtly shifting their alliance’s balance and raising questions about his next move.
