10 Meryn
Overview
Stark confronts Meryn’s chaos and then inks twelve memorial runes on her ribs, forcing Meryn to face the weight of the Bonded she killed. He reveals their departure is set for tomorrow, intensifying her dependence on his steadiness. The tattooing turns intimate, culminating in a charged, nearly consummated moment.
Summary
Meryn lights the room, anxious about the kills she must mark and the intimacy she both fears and craves. Stark arrives, notes Anassa is away and Saela asleep, and is appalled by Meryn’s clutter. He insists attendants should clean; when Meryn resists, Stark pointedly orders her to clean it, sparking unexpected arousal and underscoring their volatile dynamic.
Turning to the task, Stark explains there is little precedent for Bonded marking kills and lets Meryn choose the placement. She selects her ribs, near her heart, to memorialize the twelve lives and remind herself to control her power. As Stark prepares the needle, Meryn confronts her grief, jealousy, and confusion without using pain to numb it.
While tattooing, Stark shares that the Sovereign Alpha wants them to depart in the morning. Meryn realizes she feels safer with Stark and doesn’t want him to go. He finishes an elegant weave of runes incorporating pack symbols—twelve lines for twelve deaths—transforming horror into beauty, which unsettles her further.
Stark steadies her, then unexpectedly licks the fresh tattoo, turning ritual into intimacy. The moment ignites mutual desire; Meryn touches his face and threads her fingers in his hair. Breathing ragged, they hover on the edge of a kiss, their connection intensifying and complicating Meryn’s impending duties and lingering wounds.
