Overview
Meryn’s plan to neutralize Tormun collapses when the Phylax ambush Stark, forcing Meryn into a direct confrontation with Killian. After a brutal clash of shadebending and Goddess Tears—and Noemi’s coerced betrayal—Meryn breaks free of compulsion, maims Killian, and beheads him, ending his rule while Anassa lies gravely wounded.
Summary
Meryn feigns submission to Killian while delivering Stark and Cratos to Tormun as planned, hoping Noemi will help depose the Phylax Alpha. Tormun publicly abuses Stark, and Meryn and Anassa walk away to confront Killian, weaving a shadow barrier to conceal their exchange and buy time.
Killian demands the Goddess Tears and reveals Alistair’s presence by seizing control of his body. Meryn displays the crowns and prepares to trade words, but a surge of pain from Stark reveals Tormun’s counterplan: a squad of Phylax shielders traps Stark. Noemi escapes and searches for an opening while Stark hammers at the barrier.
Pressed, Meryn unleashes her shadebending, then the creation Tear to conjure a towering thorn prison and the destruction Tear to open an abyss. Killian evades and returns, armed with shadow-forged blades. Meryn taunts his dependence on stolen magic, provoking a struggle between Killian and Alistair that briefly destabilizes him.
Noemi cries for help over Ephyse’s injury, drawing Meryn into range. Under compulsion, Noemi snatches the Tear necklaces, fogging Meryn’s mind. Killian stabs Anassa with a shadow blade and coerces Meryn into surrendering the remaining Tears and the crowns. At the moment Killian takes the final Tear, Stark’s mental link surges through, snapping Meryn free.
Meryn immediately severs Killian’s hand bearing the Tear ring. Noemi, her mind clearing, exacts vengeance with a crippling stab. Meryn silences Killian’s taunts by driving her dagger through his mouth and beheading him. Killian falls, Alistair’s vessel destroyed, while Anassa bleeds out and Stark continues breaking the Phylax encirclement.
