22 Meryn
Overview
After Stark’s slaughter of mutineers, Meryn reveals Saela’s Siphon nature to Venna and Noemi, straining trust and splitting the group overnight. At camp, Stark exposes the brutal past and scars forged by his mother’s regime, deepening his bond with Meryn. Reunited at dawn, they ride to Weisenstat and discover Astreona breaching farmlands, signaling a worsening, possibly unsalvageable front.
Summary
Shaken after Stark kills the mutineers, Meryn manages burial while Saela, disoriented from feeding, collapses into sleep. Venna and Noemi confront Meryn when they realize Saela is a Siphon. Venna feels betrayed for having been kept in danger unknowingly; Noemi is irritated but controlled. Meryn explains Killian’s turning and memory tampering and vows to save Saela. Venna, hurt, asks for space, and she and Noemi ride ahead to Linsfall while Meryn and Stark camp outside town with Saela.
By the fire, Meryn masks their camp with shadow and tends Saela. Watching Stark, she is struck by his lethal prowess and covered scars. When she presses, Stark resists, but Meryn forces the truth: the scars predate his Bond. He reveals a childhood of brutal training, including a sadistic weapons master and Siegrid herself, who believed pain would make him survive the end of the world. Meryn’s fury spirals her shadows out of control until Anassa steadies her. Stark reframes his past as strength—he embraces fear to shield Meryn. Their charged intimacy nearly becomes a kiss before Saela coughs, and they settle uneasily to sleep.
At dawn, Venna and Noemi return. Venna and Meryn reconcile on the condition of greater transparency; Noemi, pragmatic, asks only that Saela not bite her. Saela, ashamed, is comforted by Venna. The group rides hard toward Weisenstat, Saela more alert. As the terrain opens into farms, smoke pillars rise beyond the defensive line. Tapping the rifted pack-mind, Meryn senses mounting panic. From a hill they see Astreonan incursions burning secured farmland, proof the Siphons are advancing and the situation is worse than expected. They descend toward a front in crisis.
