60 Meryn

Overview

In the aftermath of killing Killian, Meryn disperses the coercive magic, confirms Anassa will recover, and frees herself from the controlling bracelet. She stabilizes the fractured camp, accepts Egith’s aid, and relocates to Blumenfall. Meryn forgives Noemi, weighs the fate of the Tears, receives hopeful news about Saela from Ruby, and finally allows herself rest with Stark.

Summary

Meryn beheads Killian and watches eerie blue smoke rise from his neck, a fleeting echo of Alistair. She reins in her shadows, disperses the magic, and collapses from exhaustion. Remembering Anassa, Meryn finds the direwolf alive but wounded and stanches the bleeding as Stark and Cratos reassert control over the direwolves freed from Killian’s coercion.

Meryn’s engagement bracelet loosens and opens of its own accord, falling away and lifting a long-held burden. Stark comforts Meryn and confirms Anassa will recover with rest. Noemi returns Killian’s opal ring, wracked by guilt; Meryn absolves her, insisting Killian’s control voided consent. Meryn collects the fallen Tears, vows no one should hold a Tear that commands worship, and resolves to return Lucien’s two while debating the fate of the rest. Stark defers to her decision, though his unease shows.

With Tormun dead after resisting even under compulsion, the Phylax are leaderless as Egith and the Bonded arrive from Blumenfall. Egith offers sanctuary; Sofos and the wolves help stabilize Anassa. Meryn addresses Killian’s camp, promising no punishment for those coerced, inviting any who cannot trust her to leave, and setting a foundation for rebuilding based on consent and trust. The group departs for Blumenfall with Anassa borne on a makeshift stretcher.

At Lord Blumenfall’s manor, Anassa is confirmed to be healing and rests under Cratos’s guard. Ruby visits, conveying that Fredrich reports Saela is adapting in Astreona and hopes to enroll her in school. Meryn agrees, grateful yet wary, and thanks Ruby for saving her father while holding personal boundaries as they navigate their new ties.

Later, Stark has drawn a bath, and Meryn, finally unshackled from the bracelet and the weight of Killian’s threat, allows herself comfort and intimacy. She acknowledges the open questions about the Tears and the work ahead but chooses to rest and recover, embracing a rare moment of peace with Stark.
