Overview
Meryn and Anassa finally confront their rift, exchanging full honesty. Anassa reveals her long solitude and lineage, and they agree to communicate better. Meryn recruits Izabel, Tomison, Nevah, and Venna to stay as interim advisors and keep Saela’s condition quiet. Noticing strange power amplification, they speculate on rifting. That night, Killian infiltrates Meryn’s shadow-dream, reasserting his threat.
Summary
In the Sovereign Alpha’s practical chambers, Meryn invites Anassa inside and initiates an honest reckoning. She admits delaying their bond and communication, and confesses feeling hurt by Anassa’s past distance. Anassa explains centuries of loneliness, her mother’s bond to Queen Chiara, and how Meryn’s early resentment triggered instinctive withdrawal to avoid harming Meryn.
They reconcile, agree on complete honesty, and acknowledge their shared hotheadedness. Meryn probes the implications of Anassa’s mate bond to Cratos and how it may affect Stark. Anassa clarifies boundaries: riders can mentally reach each other, but inter-wolf communication is sacred and only used in emergencies. Intense emotions may bleed through bonds, but not thoughts.
Meryn asks for inherited guidance on ruling; Anassa admits none, committing to learn together. Friends Izabel, Tomison, Nevah, and Venna arrive with emberwine. Meryn recounts Killian’s escape and shadow disappearance.
