Overview
Meryn executes the captured Mother Priestess, then foresees Jonah leading Bonded to Linsfall. Choosing retreat to regroup with Lucien, the party is ambushed; Jonah slays Skaia and mortally wounds Venna. Meryn wields the destructive Tear to shatter the battlefield, and Lucien turns Venna into a Siphon to save her life, severing her pack bonds.
Reeling from loss and transformed loyalties, they flee to fight on their own terms.
Summary
Amid Linsfall’s ruins, the Mother Priestess taunts Meryn that Killian’s forces are coming. Consumed by fury and memories of Killian’s cruelty, Meryn severs the priestess’s hands and snaps her neck. At Stark’s urging, Meryn uses foresight and sees Jonah leading Bonded toward Linsfall.
Meryn gathers Stark, Noemi, and Venna from the refugee camp. Although torn about abandoning survivors, she decides to withdraw and reunite with Lucien and Elias, aiming to consolidate six Tears before confronting Killian on chosen ground.
As they ride for camp, arrows strike: Skaia is impaled through the throat, and Venna collapses choking, their pain tearing through the bonds. At the treeline Jonah appears with Bonded archers. Meryn, fueled by the destructive Tear, unleashes a blinding surge that rips a widening chasm, swallowing riders, wolves, and trees, breaking the enemy line.
Meryn rushes back to Venna. With Skaia dying, Lucien forces his wrist to Venna’s lips; after a moment’s struggle and despair, Venna drinks. Skaia dies, and Venna lives—but her bond to the pack vanishes as she becomes a Siphon. Meryn, shattered but resolute, helps Venna mount Anassa.
With Stark leading and Noemi and Lucien covering, they abandon Skaia’s body and flee under cover of magic, determined to regroup and choose the terms of the coming fight.
