Chapter 47 - The Schmunzeler
Overview
After the terrifying basement inspection, another knock proves to be Rudy, not the Nazis. Rudy teases Liesel about stealing and smoke, then checks on her injury and leaves. The close call over, Liesel feels relief, believing her actions helped keep Max and her foster parents safe.
Summary
Moments after the Nazi basement inspection, a second knock sends fear through the Hubermann household. Max is quickly hidden again, and Rosa climbs the stairs to answer. Instead of officers, she finds Rudy Steiner, who has come to check on Liesel.
Liesel intercepts Rudy at the door. He jokes about the smell of smoke and suggests selling cigarettes, prompting a quiet exchange so Rosa will not hear. Rudy teases Liesel about stealing and calls to Tommy Müller, then retreats, pleased with his own humor. Before leaving fully, Rudy returns to ask if Liesel is all right.
In early June, with Germany fraying around them, Liesel answers that everything is good—meaning Max remains undiscovered and her foster parents are safe. The scare has passed for now, and Liesel believes her quick actions helped protect their secret and preserve a fleeting sense of normalcy.
