Chapter 80 - The End of The World (Part II)

Bombers strike Molching without adequate warning. Death walks Himmel Street, collecting souls: Tommy and Kristina Müller, Frau Holtzapfel, Frau Diller, the organized Fiedlers, and the Steiner family. Death lingers over Rudy, carrying him tenderly and recalling his dreams and unspoken love for Liesel.

At 33 Himmel Street, Death takes Hans Hubermann, honoring his kindness, music, and promises, and then Rosa, remembering her hidden largeness of heart. The raid leaves the street a burning ruin as the LSE begin pulling survivors from the rubble.

Liesel is dragged out alive, dazed, clutching her book. She fixates on a broken accordion case and follows it, recognizing Papa’s instrument. Then she sees the first bodies in the open, including Frau Holtzapfel, and stumbles on the lined bodies of her neighbors.

Liesel finds Rudy among the dead. She pleads for him to wake, confesses she loves him, and finally kisses him. Grief-stricken, she moves on and discovers Hans and Rosa together in the debris, sits between them, recalls Rosa’s fierce love, and avoids Hans’s face until she is able to face him.

Liesel asks the LSE for Papa’s accordion and lays it beside Hans, imagining him rising to play it one last time. She embraces him in farewell before being led away. Her manuscript is trampled and tossed onto a garbage truck, but Death retrieves it—revealing how the story came into Death’s hands.
