Chapter 36 - The Losers
Overview
Liesel and Rudy join a new thieving crew under Viktor Chemmel, a cruel, charismatic leader who hoards scant pickings and demands submission. When Rudy challenges the unfair split, Chemmel assaults him and promises retaliation, marking a darker turn in the children’s thefts and escalating future conflict.
Summary
Liesel and Rudy meet the old fruit-stealing group by the river, now led by Viktor Chemmel, a wealthy, domineering boy who steals for pleasure. Viktor mocks Liesel and tests both children’s resolve; they agree to join despite sensing his cruelty.
The gang heads to distant farms, only to find the orchards sparse. With poor yields and Viktor’s tighter control, the end-of-day division is paltry. Liesel and Rudy are given a single small apple, plus a half-eaten one thrown in the dirt.
Rudy objects to the unfair share, and Viktor immediately tackles him, pinning Rudy and choking him as a show of power. Liesel protests, but Viktor relents only after drawing blood from Rudy’s nose, then orders them to leave and insults Liesel.
As Liesel leads Rudy away, Rudy spits blood at Viktor’s feet. Viktor calmly promises future payback, a threat he will remember and act on months later.
