Chapter 73 - The End of The World (Part I)

Death opens by previewing the end of Liesel’s world: a rainy night in Molching as tin-can planes pass overhead. Their bomb bay doors open and, despite being off target, the bombs fall toward Himmel Street. Any hope that a place named after heaven would be spared proves false.

The raid obliterates the street. Houses collapse and possessions scatter. Inside, the residents—Rudy Steiner; Hans and Rosa Hubermann; Frau Holtzapfel; Frau Diller; Tommy Müller—sleep through their final moments and die. Death notes he has already carried Hans and Rosa, their bodies laid out among the others.

Only Liesel Meminger survives. Previously deemed too shallow, the Hubermann basement protects her on October 7 because Liesel sits awake, reading the story of her own life. After the bombing, amid an eerie silence, the local LSE hear faint hammering: a girl tapping a paint can with a pencil.

The rescuers dig, pass debris hand to hand, and uncover Liesel’s hair. They lift her out, joyous she is alive, not noticing the book still in her grasp. As realization hits, Liesel screams for her father—“Papa!”—and struggles to find him, the words in her hands the only thing that saved her.
