Chapter 76 - Way of the Words
Overview
Liesel locates Max in a Jewish death march through Molching and publicly reunites with him, invoking their shared story. Soldiers whip both of them, and Max is forced onward. Rudy restrains Liesel from following. The scene reaffirms Liesel and Max’s bond while exposing the peril of defiance under Nazi rule.
Summary
As a new column of Jews is marched toward Dachau, Liesel joins the onlookers on Munich Street, searching the faces for Max Vandenburg. She recognizes him not by features but by his intent gaze into the crowd. Overcome, Liesel steps into the procession and reaches him, despite a soldier dragging her out.
Undeterred, Liesel reenters from the rear and calls to Max, invoking lines from The Word Shaker. Max stops, looks to the sky, and acknowledges her. Liesel touches his face; he confirms it is him and begins to cry as soldiers close in.
A soldier whips Max, then lashes Liesel when she will not leave. Rudy Steiner appears from the crowd, shouting at Liesel to get out. Max is forced up and shoved forward, bloodied and staggering.
Liesel tries to chase after Max again, but Rudy tackles and restrains her on the road, absorbing her blows. Together, they watch the column dissolve into the distance, as Max is driven on with the other prisoners.
