Summary
Late that night, Max Vandenburg walks up Himmel Street with a suitcase of food and clothing, leaving number thirty-three behind. Liesel, still feeling his goodbye kiss on her forehead, hears him promise he has left her something she will receive when she is ready. He exits her room and shuts the door, and the house settles into a stunned stillness.
Liesel finds Hans and Rosa in the kitchen, rigid and wordless, marking the gravity of Max’s departure. A Duden dictionary entry defines silence as peace, but the family’s experience contradicts it; their quiet is heavy and aching, not calm.
Meanwhile, Max moves through the darkness near Munich. He arranges to meet Hans in four days at a broken bridge along the Amper, a plan shadowed by the risk that Hans might be taken by the authorities. Max intends to stay only minutes, underscoring the danger to everyone.
Four days later, Hans reaches the rendezvous to find only a note under a rock: “You’ve done enough.” Max has already moved on, severing contact to protect the Hubermanns. Back on Himmel Street, the family lives with a new, painful quiet, learning that silence is not peace but the cost of survival.
