Summary
Hans uses summer earnings to buy a secondhand radio so the family can hear warnings before the sirens. It barely works in the basement for Max. One September night, the sirens wail; Hans wakes Liesel, and the family rushes out after saying goodbye to Max, who insists they shelter at the Fiedlers’ deeper cellar.
Himmel Street pours into the night, clutching precious belongings. At the Fiedlers’ basement, twenty-two neighbors squeeze in: the Steiners, Frau Holtzapfel, Pfiffikus, the Jensons, and others. Fear dominates the cramped room as Liesel quietly ranks who is most afraid. Rosa rocks and whispers a faint song; Hans offers silent reassurance. Rudy jokes to mask dread and stands beside Liesel.
As minutes crawl, Alex Steiner leads the group to hold hands in a rough circle, trading warmth and pulse amid questions of guilt and fate. Liesel grips Rudy’s and Rosa’s hands while silently asking Hans if he’s thinking of Max; Hans nods. Eventually, three sirens signal safety, and relief surges through the room. The neighbors ascend, shaken but alive.
The Hubermanns hurry home to check the basement. At first they can’t find Max; then they spot him among the paint sheets, stunned. Max confesses he crept to the corridor during the quiet and, through a slit in the curtain, saw the stars for the first time in twenty-two months. There is no scolding—only shared understanding of fear and longing.
With Rosa’s permission, Liesel stays with Max through the night, reading A Song in the Dark as Max sketches and writes. He records the moment: from a Himmel Street window, the stars burned his eyes. The night leaves all four—Hans, Rosa, Liesel, and Max—changed by the nearness of danger and the fragile wonder of survival.
