Summary
In snowy days before Christmas 1942, Liesel repeatedly studies Max’s The Word Shaker and resolves to give Rudy a real present. On Christmas Eve, after the Steiners invite Rosa, Trudy, and Liesel for the holiday, Liesel tells Rudy she has a gift for him—one she hasn’t obtained yet.
Reading Liesel’s intent to steal, Rudy retrieves his father’s shop key. At dusk they enter the dark, powerless tailor shop. Amid stumbling and a toppled mannequin, Rudy fetches a lantern from the church, and Liesel searches the racks for something that will fit him.
Liesel selects a navy suit. Rudy tries it on behind a curtain, emerging in sharp clothes over a dirty shirt and battered shoes. Their teasing turns to a charged moment as Rudy trips onto the fallen mannequin and laughs, then tightens with emotion.
