Chapter 22 - The Struggler, Continued
Overview
On November 3, Max Vandenburg departs Stuttgart under Nazi scrutiny, disguised by a clean shave and the camouflage of Mein Kampf. Aided by Walter Kugler’s ticket, map, and key, Max endures a tense train ride, narrowly avoiding document checks. His approach toward Munich and Pasing advances him toward Hans Hubermann’s refuge.
Summary
Death jumps ahead to a cold November night. Max Vandenburg boards a train on November 3, gripping Mein Kampf as both disguise and talisman. He forces himself to appear calm, reading to mask fear while a woman across the compartment sleeps and the countryside slips past.
Days earlier, hidden by Walter Kugler, Max learned time was up. Walter, drafted into the army, made a final visit, leaving food, a ticket from Stuttgart to Munich to Pasing, a map, and a key taped inside the book. He also supplied a razor, shaving cream, a spoon, and scissors so Max could alter his appearance.
Max shaved, cut his hair, and walked out looking nondescript, leaving a small mound of hair behind. At the station he presented his ticket and identity card once. The dreaded call of “Papers.” did not come again; inspectors later only checked tickets, sparing him a second test he felt he could not survive.
As the train rattled east, Max read continuously, tasting only the title—Mein Kampf—as a bitterly ironic shield. With Stuttgart behind him and Munich and Pasing ahead, he planned to disembark and walk the rest of the way, closing in on Hans Hubermann’s promised sanctuary.
