Liesel, nearly fourteen, chooses to give instead of steal, secretly returning Ilsa Hermann’s plate and confronting her grief over Werner. At the river she releases her brother’s memory and her nightmares stop. That night brings softer visions; by morning, Rosa quietly prays with the accordion for the men to return alive.
Summary
Weeks before turning fourteen, with Hans still away, Liesel continues reading to the grieving Frau Holtzapfel while Rosa clings to the accordion in private prayers. Seeking to give rather than steal, Liesel cleans and returns a plate to 8 Grande Strasse, leaving it at the Hermanns’ door before slipping away.
As Liesel departs, she imagines Werner at the steps, healed and approving. At the Amper River, where Hans used to lean, she smiles through a release of grief. The catharsis severs the hold of her recurring nightmares; she accepts Werner will remain six and lets the vision go.
That night, Liesel’s room fills with gentler visitations: Hans calling her half a woman, Max writing The Word Shaker, Rudy by the door, her mother on a platform, and Werner playing in cemetery snow. The presences keep her company rather than haunt her.
By morning, the visions fade and Liesel hears Rosa softly praying with the accordion, pleading for the men to come back alive. Liesel believes such prayers may have helped Hans survive the LSE accident in Essen, or at least could not have hurt.
