Summary
The narrator departs Molching for a secret storage room in Stuttgart, introducing Max, a Jewish man hiding alone in complete darkness. Exhausted and starving, Max sits on his suitcase, trying not to move or make noise, fearing discovery.
A cautious ally finally arrives, whispering to wake Max. Explaining delays and surveillance, the man hands over a book that conceals an identity card, a map, written directions, and a key taped inside. He also leaves a small bag with bread, fat, three carrots, and a bottle of water—the best he can manage.
After the door closes, the darkness amplifies every sound. Max rations the food but devours portions in noisy gulps, worrying even the Führer could hear him. He checks his teeth in the dark, then turns to the book he cannot safely read by matchlight.
Alone again, Max whispers a plea to someone he has never met—Hans Hubermann. His fear, hunger, and isolation crystallize into hope that these documents and this connection will lead him out of hiding and toward safety.
