Chapter 31 - The Swapping of Nightmares

Max Vandenburg, ashamed of having slept in Liesel’s room on arrival, vows to remain in the basement and asks for minimal food. Hans and Rosa build a makeshift hideaway under the stairs and begin a precarious routine of feeding, washing, and disposing of waste, all while acting normal to avoid suspicion. Liesel initially avoids Max, but is compelled to deliver food and is transfixed by his copy of Mein Kampf.

Life above must appear unchanged. Hans continues playing music to keep up appearances, and Rosa proves steady in crisis, rationing food and softening her manner. Liesel keeps the secret, spends time with Rudy, hears of his harsh Hitler Youth leader, and continues visiting Ilsa Hermann’s library, where she fixates on The Whistler despite the cold and fear it stirs.

As Max deteriorates in the freezing basement, Hans insists on bringing him upstairs at night to warm by the fire behind closed curtains. A new routine forms: Max sleeps on the floor at night and returns silently to the basement by day. Christmas passes without incident; Trudy visits, none the wiser. Max remains grateful yet guilt-ridden, and he begins speaking softly about his past, fielding the Hubermanns’ questions and confessing his shame at endangering them.

During late-night readings, Liesel and Max hear each other’s nightmares. One dawn, Liesel approaches him, and they exchange the truths of their recurring dreams—Max’s partings and Liesel’s dead brother—cementing their bond. Liesel tells Hans she can now face her nightmares alone, letting him rest while the hidden life inside 33 Himmel Street stays strictly divided from the world outside.

Liesel brings Max a newspaper for crosswords and, for her twelfth birthday, receives The Mud Men from her foster parents. Seeing Max empty-handed and isolated, she crosses to hug him for the first time. Max, moved, resolves to repay her with a gift he will fashion from paper and deliver before retreating to the basement he now calls home.
