Chapter 71 - One Toolbox, One Bleeder, One Bear

Angered by his father’s conscription and the news that Hans Hubermann is returning home, Rudy decides to strike back by stealing from wealthy Nazis. He marches out with a red toolbox packed with tools, spare socks, and a small teddy bear to pacify any frightened child he might encounter. Liesel intercepts him and follows as he describes his plan, but on Gelb Strasse his bravado ebbs, and he and Liesel sit back to back on the toolbox until he abandons the heist, leaving behind his wet socks.

Weeks later, Rudy repurposes the toolbox to protect his family’s valuables during air raids, keeping only the teddy bear inside. On March 9, sirens wail again. Michael Holtzapfel begs Rosa and Liesel to help; his mother refuses to leave her kitchen. Liesel’s appeals fail, and Rosa pushes everyone toward the Fiedlers’ basement. Michael is tormented by guilt and a will to live that he does not understand.

Frau Holtzapfel eventually enters the shelter and sits beside Michael, tending his bleeding hand. Through a long night of bombing, Liesel reads aloud, drying her mouth as she turns fifty-four pages to steady the frightened group.

When the all clear lingers, Bettina Steiner spots smoke near the river. Rudy races toward it with the toolbox, Liesel and others following. They find a crashed Allied plane. Rudy cautions Liesel but both approach the wreck, where an injured, pale pilot breathes weakly and speaks a faint, incomprehensible thanks.

Rudy climbs up and gently sets the teddy bear on the pilot’s shoulder. As the crowd gathers, Death arrives, lifts the pilot’s soul from the cockpit, and departs beneath a sky briefly stamped with a swastika’s silhouette. Behind, the teddy bear rests on the corpse while the town absorbs the moment’s quiet, terrible mercy.
